So we finally have the ‘V’ day nearing on us. I read it somewhere that approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-selling holiday after Christmas. Would it make me sound very anti valentine when I say that I have never been out on a Valentine’s Day, and never even wanted to? Since my idea of fun especially with my loved one is not getting stranded in traffic, and afterwards queuing and waiting for my turn to finally get the ‘cozy’ corner table.
I would rather spend the Sunday, as it is on a Sunday this time around, in my comfortable pj’s in the comfort of my home with a glass of red wine and of course my sweetheart serenading me with the ‘A Farewell to Love’ poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, in 1415 for his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt, as the oldest known valentine poem written.
Je suis desja d’amour tanné,
[I am already sick of love]
Ma tres doulce Valentinée,
[My very gentle Valentine]
Ok fine, it’s not a pleasant one. Maybe Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116, perhaps? And if one doesn’t have a sweetheart then how about spending it in the company of some good friends? Valentine’s is all about celebrating love, isn’t? Or may be putting the earplugs on and tuning into “Truly Madly Deeply“, a song by Australian pop band Savage Garden. Now the song was released 19 years back and was a major success in the U.S., beginning in 1997. I reminisce being totally obsessed with the song and the lead singer, dressed in all black and walking around the French neighborhood. So the fair hearted souls among us who find themselves in their own company can enjoy a song or two while sipping away the ‘le vin de merlot’.
Nothing wrong in dreaming about the one, is it?
I’ll be your dream
I’ll be your wish I’ll be your fantasy
I’ll be your hope I’ll be your love
Be everything that you need
I’ll love you more with every breath
Truly, madly, deeply do
I will be strong I will be faithful
’cause I’m counting on
A new beginning
A reason for living
A deeper meaning, yeah
I want to stand with you on
a mountain
I want to bathe with you in the sea
I want to lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me….
And for the ones who don’t drink alcohol, how about a cup of coffee? Starbucks, the coffee king, started serving three new drinks on their menu as Valentine’s Day approaches. The trio of the Molten Chocolate beverage additions are – the Molten Chocolate Latte, the Molten Chocolate Frappuccino, and the Molten Hot Chocolate, available at participating stores until February 14th.
What screams love more than coffee and chocolate? And if that’s not enough we also give you SOUL’s top ten romantic movies of all times.
