What better way to start this article than with the description of Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. Painted in June, 1889, the painting depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. Though many may vary with their perception of the colors used, we see them as a combination of blue and gold. This brings us to this unique color combination, which is not very unpopular combination, but yet not incorporated by many in their homes.
Lighter shades of blue are known for its cooling effect on people. When we talk about shades of blue, the open sky and wavy water instantly comes to our mind, bringing us a sense of peacefulness. If we look around the world and Europe in particular, we can find many houses which have this ideal color combination in their homes. Is it to do with the fact that Europe is a country where most royalty reign from and it’s an ideal choice for the royals or that by using this shade somewhere we also try to appease ourselves by being a part of the royalty in color, if not in anything else? Whatever the reasons may be, one cannot deny the fact that blue and gold together beautifies the look of a dull and boring place in an instant.
