and Burberry loves us…

After the Royal Family of the United Kingdom if there’s any other family that I would consider to be royalty among the common folks (i.e. not actually belonging to the royal blood), I would say it’s the ‘Beckhams’.

David Beckham and his equally famous wife Victoria Beckham have seen the ups and downs in both their personal as well as professional lives. They both have their respective flourishing careers and an amazing marriage. And what’s more, their children (the older one is a teen, 16een) are also following their own career paths with Broooklyn sometime back confiding in his footballer Dad that he is not sure if he wants to play football.

“One of my boys turned around to me the other day and said, ‘daddy, I’m not sure I want to play football all the time’,'” Beckham told Chang. “It broke my heart a little bit. He said, ‘every time I step on to the field, I know people are saying, ‘this is David Beckham’s son,’ and if I am not as good as you, then it is not good enough’.” David took the news surprisingly well despite the initial heartbreak.

 Brooklyn seems to follow his heart and his hobbies. He was recently in the news (albeit not flattering) and was accused of ‘nepotism’. Reason behind it was that the British fashion brand Burberry decided to invite Brooklyn Beckham to shoot its latest fragrance campaign. Of course this didn’t go well with the community of Fashion Photographers who thought and were very much seen quoting that,” it devalues the skills and training of professionals” by hiring the inexperienced 16-year-old celebrity child.

We are Beckhams and Burberry has always been on the Beckhams side with their middle son Romeo being a regular model for the elite brand and not to forget the fact that Romeo’s role in the label’s Christmas advert attracted 11million views within 48 hours of launch and boosted the brand. Obviously the brand would like to have the older son of the Beckhams to increase their followers as well, as we all know Brooklyn (with million Instagram followers) is a massive hit with not only the younger population but also middle aged folks as well. It definitely is a clever strategy on the brands part and it did work well for them because the photographs did turn out pretty good and candid and they got the desired publicity not only from their product or Brooklyn but also from other photographers. As soon after it was announced that Brooklyn would do the covering, all hell broke loose.

Fashion photographer Chris Floyd told the Guardian that Burberry’s decision to employ the inexperienced Beckham was a “devaluation of photography” that showed a lack of respect for hardworking experienced professionals. The 47-year-old, who is best known for his striking portraits of celebrities including those of Stephen Fry and Paul McCartney, also said Brooklyn’s jump to professionalism “goes against everything his parents represent”. He said: “David and Victoria Beckham represent sheer willpower and graft. Especially her, she’s climbed that mountain all by herself. They represent hard work and then their 16-year-old year son comes along and it’s sheer nepotism. He hasn’t done it from hard work, which is counter-intuitive to what his parents represent.”

But some photographers did support Brooklyn and defended him like Sarah Brimley, a photographer who until recently worked as an assistant to the fashion photographer David Bailey. “I don’t think he feels entitled and I don’t imagine he’s this spoilt brat,” the 29-year-old said. “He hasn’t had to do the work the rest of us have to do but … he probably knows how lucky he is.”

At SOUL, we totally believe that the ‘struggle’ path definitely becomes easy if you have famous parents and we won’t be the hypocrite by not admitting that we all desire to get a break sooner than later. But in the end it is your talent which is going to keep you afloat. So we will see how Brooklyn fares in future but let’s give the teen a break and let him enjoy his silver spoon meanwhile.
