Not many of us would know this but the term makeover is quite apt for ‘chandeliers’. Originally borrowed from the 12th-century old Spanish, chandelier word appeared in the English Language towards the end of the 14th century. Chandelier was a new spelling of the French word ‘Chandelabre’, which was picked from the Latin ‘Candelabrum” which again was previously picked up from the Latin word ‘Candela’ which means a ‘Candle’.
Talk about Heritage, huh!
If we try to pinpoint the first usage of Chandeliers, it would be during the Medieval Times when the most basic definition of the Chandelier would have been as simple as a light fixture which was suspended from the ceiling, usually having branch supports and two or more candles depending on how wealthy one was.
But post Medieval Times we began to see what one can call a makeover of the Chandelier via a revolution of its design and utility. Chandelier soon became popular as a decorative feature in the homes and gardens of the rich and the nobles. It became a symbol of luxury and status with its high cost and fancy designing, making it a very crucial aspect in the designing of the house and outdoor.
And for all of us today, the best part of living in the 21st century is that we can have them made in designs ranging from the 15th century models to the current ones as per the décor and theme of the room or garden. Still the most popular Chandelier today would hands-down be the ‘Crystal Chandelier’ with its multifarious arrays of crystal prisms that illuminates a room with refracted light. From the aristocrats, to the middle class, to the noveaus of today one can find a crystal chandelier hanging proudly in their rooms, albeit the quality of crystals depends on the affordability of the buyer.
