So the last few days have been all about Super Bowl 2016. You open any newspaper or e-paper and the first news that pops out at you is that of the Super Bowl happenings. For the ignorant ones (and I would like to count myself in it as well), ‘Super Bowl’ is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) and the highest level of professional footballing in the United States. We Indians had our own Super Bowl version in the form of IPL (yes we think Lalilt Modi got the inspiration from the American Super Bowl).
Anyways back to the happenings of Super Bowl, which kicked off with Lady Gaga’s pre-game performance of the national anthem, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. Dressed in a rocking custom Gucci pantsuit and high-heel platforms, with teased-up hair, red eyeshadow and blue fingernails, Lady Gaga mesmerized the audience with her heartfelt performance, giving goosebumps to the audience both watching live and via electronic media.
Post her astounding performance, Gaga spoke about her mindset going into the National Anthem. “I just thought about the lyrics and what they really mean,” Gaga told ‘Extra’. “They’ve been around a long time, so I thought about what they mean now, I just sang from my heart. It was really amazing, the athletes were just kind of majestic standing up there, singing for the fans in the stands and all over the world, it was so cool,” Gaga added of performing in front of a sold-out Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara as well as an American television audience of nearly 112 million.
“It’s kind of ancient history stuff, in the Greek and Roman history, performing for the greatest athletics in the world is the highest honor. I’m Italian and European, so for me it was such an honor as an American.” Gaga also said that she made an effort to take notice of the fighter jets that soared overhead as the National Anthem closed out. “I promised myself I was going to look up to see them, because that would be the only time,” Gaga said.
The other interesting news from SuperBowl 2016 concerned Cindy Crawford, our favorite model who still manages to get a ‘wow gasp’ out of us. Cindy seems to be aging like a fine wine, getting better with time. I am sure most of you remember her memorable 1992 Super Bowl Pepsi commercial (and for those who don’t, we will be sharing the video). The super model shared the following info about that commercial on her twitter page “Tune in to @latelateshow tonight! @JKCorden and I recreate an iconic #SuperBowl commercial…cc: @pepsi”.
At 49, Crawford looked flawless in the denim shorts (for a minute I got confused if she is the ‘now’ Cindy or the younger one). The skit started out just like her original commercial from ’92, with Cindy still retaining her killer drop-dead-gorgeous body and lustrous hair, but towards the end when the Pepsi machine she is purchasing a soda from gets stuck, Corden comes to the rescue and joins in on the fun (again, we will be sharing the video, so don’t sweat).
Last but not the least, in the news was Beyoncé who garnered a bit of wrong publicity when Beyoncé‘s backing dancers wore outfits similar to those of 60s civil rights group the Black Panthers. The pop star, 34, who had been accused of shunning her black heritage, stunned viewers by performing her new single Formation. And in front of a TV audience of one billion, her dancers paraded in outfits similar to controversial activists the Black Panthers. They also raised their fists in an apparent tribute.
Along with Beyoncé there were performances by Bruno Mars and Coldplay as well. And that’s all for now, but do keep a lookout for more updates from Super Bowl 2016!
