It’s an immense pleasure to know that in Bollywood the term ‘bimbo’ rarely applies these days. With most of the newbies making the beeline for Bollywood being graduates, post grads and some even armed with an MBA or a PHD, they are making their presence felt with both their beauty and brains.
Twinkle Khanna, who recently turned author by publishing her first ever book (Mrs. Funnybones), and veterans like Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan and Deepti Naval are to but name a few who manage to capture the audience with not only their ethereal beauty but also their wits and intelligence.
Sharmila Tagore, who was born as a descendant of the famous Bengali poet Late Shri Rabindranath Tagore, was perhaps one of the early heroines to have donned a bikini in one of her early movies. Her daughter Soha Ali Khan may not have been a very successful commercial actress but she is the toast of the intellectual circle. Few would have known that Soha is an Oxford Graduate and used to work in a bank before she signed her first movie at the age of 25. Her husband Kunal Khemu was equally daunted by this intelligent beauty at first and didn’t know if they would click. But rest as everyone knows is history.
Very rarely do we get a chance to catch the mother-daughter (Sharmila and Soha Ali Khan) duo together. Not only they belong to a reputed lineage (the Tagore & the Pataudi blood line) but have carved a niche for themselves in both their professional as well as personal life. The dynamic duo is ever ready to lend their support for noble social causes specially relating to women. Last year, all of the Pataudis came together in supporting a national television show backed by the Population Council of India aired on Doordarshan. The show “Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon” is about women’s fundamental rights to education, decision making, etc. This time the mother-daughter (Sharmila and Soha Ali Khan) duo was in Hyderabad to talk about Women Empowerment at an event hosted by FICCI Ladies Organisation Hyderabad.
