Some, especially floor mosaics, are made of small rounded pieces of stone, and are called pebble mosaics. Others are made of different materials.
It dates back to the Mesopotamian civilization, where pebbles where used instead of the Modern day ceramic tiles and were stuck to beautify mundane walls.
Mosaic spreads through Greece, Rome and parts of Europe and Asia where it is still used for ornamentation.
