Your Bedroom is your personal sanctuary, it is a space that is occupied by the inhabitants and not guests. Bedrooms are personal and we all love to incorporate our individuality, uniqueness and make it distinct and idiosyncratic. Our design style may vary but lighting can surely transform the space and add some excitement and make us feel elated. Believe or not but, lighting being the magical ingredient in interior can make or break a space.
We ought to give primacy to our lightning because it helps to create both reality and illusion. It illuminates, embellishes and enhances our cherished objects, highlights our colors and most importantly affects our frame of mind. Good lighting is a source for triggering our happy emotions and uplifting our spirits.
There are many a times when we tend to commit some minor errors or not pay attention to certain detailing. First and foremost, we tend to rely upon one lighting source for our entire space and fail to realize that poor lighting makes our room mundane and lifeless. After all, who likes monochrome pictures? To resolve it mix a variety of floor or table lamps. Warm pool of light draw people in and build intimacy. Another mistake is using only overhead lighting. It’s output is very bright which turns out to be too harsh and unflattering. Like the famous interior designer Andrew Galuppi said –“ You don’t want guests in your home to feel like they are waiting in a hospital emergency room”.
Another major misconception many of you hold is to light the entire room. “ The best lit rooms have layers of light that blend well together” said the architect and designer David Rockwell. For multipurpose rooms, Dimmers are essential. They give us the freedom to play with the ambiance depending on the time of the day, our mood and they are very essential for saving energy. Only one light source makes the ambiance very depressing. Whether it is a small nook in the room or a grand master suite, we use our bedroom for more than just to take a siesta. Dark rooms solve the purpose for a catnap but too little light hinders us from doing any other task. Bedroom lighting can vary from basic to bold, or dimmed to bright. It should be done keeping in mind the size of the space, purpose and its functionality and also as an add on accessory to the décor.
A bedroom should posses a restful, romantic and functional lighting. To justify to these desires I believe there are three major categories of lighting , they being, General, Task, and Accent. They should work in harmony, none dominating the other. No single fixture can fulfill the lighting needs. If I further classify these categories we have in general the ceiling lights. Ceiling Lights should have a light color shade teamed with low watt bulbs. Under Task lights we can incorporate good reading lights at the bed sides and study desk and a light at the dresser goes without saying. Recessed lights (task light) is a necessity in your closet. Our fathers who tend to restrict themselves to blue and black trousers can only distinguish between the two with good lighting. Also we should not forget our Night lights.
When sharing a room, one might fear sleeping in dark while the partner might be uncomfortable sleeping with lights on. But thanks to our upcoming technology, now it is easy to add a soft light under the table, bed or floor skirting, softly lighting the floor. Under Accent lighting we should focus on our Spot lights which generally go along with wall pictures and paintings. Also Romantic lighting is a soft accent lighting which is a key to setting the perfect ambiance. A bedroom is a place where two souls unite and share their emotions with one another. The right lighting only lights the spark to the candle. Lighting is also a stylish accessory that complements the overall look of your space. Lighting creates Atmosphere, Drama and Intrigue in a room.
I can vividly recall the words of the famous designer Paul Lynde –“ A room is like a stage. If you see it without lighting, it can be the coldest place in the world”. Illuminate your bedroom with luxurious lighting and see how it brightens your soul within.
