With December already here, its time to get out those Duvets and Quilts. But before we go rummaging through our old ones, how about getting yourself a new set of duvet covers or those patch work quilts this Christmas?
When we talk about Duvets or Quilts many don’t realize the difference between the two. Apart from the above two which are the most common types there are few more varieties such as the Eiderdown, the Comforters and our very own Jaipuri Razai.
If we try to understand the technical difference between each of them we will realise they are all quite similar to each other but do vary slightly from one another. For e.g., a Quilt in general is a padded covering, usually made from two layers of soft fabric with another (padding) layer in between. While a comforter is essentially a type of fluffy quilted blanket that gives you “comfort”. It is usually filled with a synthetic fiber filler which is quilted or stitched to secure the filling and keep it evenly distributed.
The lesser known Eiderdown is a type of quilt that is stuffed specifically with eider (duck) feathers and was also the traditional name for quilts in general in the United Kingdom.
A Duvet is sometimes referred to as a comforter especially in the United States. It is a type of bedding which is a soft flat bag filled with down feather, or a synthetic alternative. It is usually covered with a removable cover which is called the duvet cover. The duvet originated in Europe and was made from down feathers because of its usefulness as a thermal insulator.
With so many countries coming up with their unique creations to create a warm and snugly insulator for the winters, our very own India introduced the ‘Jaipuri Razai’ which is again a form of a lightweight quilt but is handmade and the fabric used is mostly cotton with hand blocked prints and comes in various shades and colours. In recent times, Jaipuri Razai has gained immense popularity with its lightweight sturdiness which makes it easy to wash and maintain and not to mention again, the beautiful prints and colors available. The best part of the Jaipuri Razai is that it’s quite snugly for the afternoons and also keeps away the cold at nights without creating a dent in your pocket. It’s a hot favourite among localities, domestic and foreigner tourists alike.
While Quilts are popular for its patch work details and attractiveness, Duvet has its own advantages:
- Adding a duvet to your bed gives it a complete warm welcoming winter look.
- Also you can use it with a range of covers which can be removed and regularly washed.
- In addition to the cleaning advantage, one can opt from many varieties of colours prints, personalised pictures and fabrics for the covers to give your room a new look every time.
With our personal favourite picks, we make sure this winter would be a snugly balmy one for you!
