It was the second day of the FDCI India Couture Week 2016 and Anita Dongre’s debut couture collection could not have turned out better! The four years of wait was worth it as Dongre’s collection, with her signature gotapatti, got accolades from everyone present at the Taj Palace and left the audience awestruck with her contemporary take on traditional bridal wear.
Called ‘Epic Love’, the collection was inspired by the fictional tale of the mythical gypsy bride Nayantara who is decking up to meet her one true love. Decked up in the style of a Rajasthani palace garden, the runway boasted of lively jhullas, luxurious water fountains, pink bougainvillea blooming in the background and a hand-crafted thikri which added a rustic charm to the ramp.
The collection had beautifully embellished sarees and lehengas, cropped vests, long jackets, belted sarees, and cape blouses. They were all traditional styles done in contemporary silhouettes. The colours ranged from creams, rusts, pinks, moody oranges, reds, browns, to sapphire blue, all infused with a hint of gold in them. The collection that celebrated love had two parts; the collection began with brightly printed lehengas done on chintz elaborated with the trademark gotapatti work and paired up with boho blouses for the modern boho bride look. Then, it moved on to Mughal-inspired lavish pieces in deep, rich colours which had gotapatti work in a harmonious balance with thread work and zardosi.
The models flaunting heirloom pieces from Dongre’s labels Anita Dongre and PinkCity. The collection would be remembered for its fluidity and flexibility of the ensembles perfectly breathtaking even if worn as separates on their own. The designer worked on the belief that a “bride must look like herself, but just more beautiful on her special day. She should feel like a princess, light on her feet, who dances at her own wedding,” we cannot agree more to this.
