The Cannes Festival named until 2002 as the International Film Festival and known in English as the Cannes Film Festival, is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from around the world. Founded in 1946, it is one of the most talked about, together with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. The invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
The festival has become an important showcase for European films. Jill Forbes and Sarah Street argue in European Cinema: An introduction, that Cannes “became…extremely important for critical and commercial interests and for European attempts to sell films on the basis of their artistic quality”
Additionally, given massive media exposure, the non-public festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.
The 69th annual Cannes Film Festival is currently being held from 11 to 22 May 2016.
Australian director George Miller has been announced as the President of the Jury for the main competition. French actor Laurent Lafitte has been announced as the host for the opening and closing ceremonies. On 15 March, it was announced that Japanese director Naomi Kawase would serve as the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury president. American director Woody Allen’s film Café Society has been selected to open the festival.
Let’s take a look at the celebs who rocked the Cannes Film Festival 2016 so far!
It might have just been two days into the event, but that did not dampen the spirit of this star studded film festival!
Major red carpet moments from Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, and Victoria Beckham have rocked La Croisette since the first night, and with the arrival of Hollywood icons like Julia Roberts and George Clooney (and his very glamorous wife, Amal, in Versace and Cartier earrings), the bars went up real high. George and Amal Clooney rocked the red carpet. The duo looked so much in sync and in love. Aww! We think they are adorable.
Jessica Chastain sported a modern-day flapper in her Alexander McQueen dress with Piaget diamond sautoirs, while Naomi Watts brought the bling factor in a ’90s silhouette from the MK Collection.
But what really shocked us at Soul, was the ‘bahu’ of the Bacchan family. Yes! You heard that right. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan marked the red carpet at Festival De Cannes with a beautifully studded champagne colored couture gown by Kuwait’s designer Ali Younes. She made her debut at Cannes in 2002, and is celebrating 15 years of representing India and L’Oreal at the French Riviera. Oh Boy! She did turn some heads. The beauty queen made her first appearance of 2016 as she arrived for the screening of the film “Ma loute” (Slack Bay) at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
Aishwarya draped a metallic sheath overlaid by a sparkly floor-length cape. She sported bright turquoise blue liner, blue eye shadow and thick lashes. Needless to say she was looking drop-dead-gorgeous, while she decided to keep her hair in loose waves. Now take a tip from the beauty queen!
Check out her ravishing look here only on Soul!
