When I started to write this article, I was going to begin with the story on Taylor Swift sweeping the Grammys but then I heard this unexpected yet very pleasant and proud news. So let’s talk about it now and cover the Grammys later.
For the past few months Priyanka Chopra has been quite a regular feature on our webzine. And why shouldn’t she be? With the amount of hard work she is putting in her career, she deserves all the success coming her way. While the whole of India and Indians all across the world were waiting for her appearance at the Oscars this year, she threw another bit of good news towards her fans. On 16th February, The Daily Mail UK in their ‘T.V & Showbiz’ carried the story stating “Another beauty hits the beach! Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announces Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra will join his Baywatch Movie.”
The teens growing up in the 90’s would remember the show very fondly. After all, it did give them the adrenaline rush, huh! Yep, Baywatch was one of the most popular daytime shows of its time and perhaps needs no introduction. But for the younger generation not particularly acquainted with it, it was an American action drama series about the Los Angeles County Lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California, starring David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth.
Commenting on the coming together of Dwayne Johnson and PeeCee, The Daily Mail UK said, “They’re an unlikely pairing – she’s a Bollywood megastar and former Miss World, and he’s an American professional wrestler turned actor.” But Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson revealed on Tuesday that he’s recruited Priyanka Chopra for his much-anticipated Baywatch Movie. And guess what, she is not playing one of the sexy watch guards but an “extremely dangerous” villain.
Also finally putting to rest all the speculation surrounding her Hollywood movie debut, Priyanka announced that she indeed plays a negative role in Baywatch. “I met the director actually on Skype. The script had come to me through my agent and the negative part was actually written for a man, and I spoke to the director for another role in the film. But he liked the idea of me playing the negative role despite being a woman. So the script was worked on,” says Priyanka, as she recalls her journey of signing the film. We’re told she had been in talks with the makers since September last year.
‘The Rock’ Johnson captioned the announcement with: “She’s one of the biggest stars in the world. Insanely talented, relentlessly smokin’ and extremely dangerous – perfect for #BAYWATCH. Welcome @PriyankaChopra to our bad ass and incredibly dysfunctional family. Cue RATED R slo-mo running on the beach. We start shooting next week. World.. #WelcomeToBaywatch”.
The announcement also served as a confirmation that filming is finally due to start on the reboot of the 1990s classic which starred Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhof as main leads. The much-stalled project was first mooted by Johnson back in 2013 – when he wrote: “This is my beach b*tch!’” to announce his connection in trademark style.
Reading about it gives us ‘goosebumps’. Priyanka Chopra must be over the cloud being casted in the hit series which she must have practically grew up watching.
