The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year the event also has honorary celebrity event day chairpersons.
The Gala is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive social events in New York and one of the biggest fundraising nights in the city!
It is one of the most notable sources of funding for the Institute. The affair, attended by personalities from the arts, fashion, high-society, film and music, has been held at the Met since 1946 and is considered to be the fashion industry’s premier annual red carpet event. Its red carpet fashions are widely photographed, reviewed, critiqued and emulated.
So, what was so obnoxiously stunning this year ?
This year’s Met Gala witnessed the fusion of high fashion and cutting-edge technology. The theme of the gala, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute :
“Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” — and many of the event’s celebrity guests took the theme to heart, blending their couture looks with supercool tech. The event was co-hosted by Apple’s chief design officer, Jonathan Ive.
We decided to pick out the top 5 looks that ruled this year’s Gala.
Let’s take a look!
1. Beyonce
She rocked the carpet with a jeweled latex Givenchy Haute Couture dress and smoky eyes, and kept her hair simple. Oh boy! She did own it.
2. Kim K & Kanye West
Kim K sported a silvery Balmain dress with a corset cut out and Angeline Jolie slit paired with a bold ear cuff while her better half Kanye West wore a studded silver Balmain jacket paired with ripped jeans and wore blue contacts to match his jeans!
3. Taylor Swift
Rocking her bleached-blonde bob, Taylor opted for a Louis Vuitton silver, snakeskin dress with side cutouts.
She paired the look with strappy, stilettos and super dark lips spreading the goth vibe!
4. Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik
Aww! Isn’t this couple adorable? And both of them embraced the theme so well.
Zayn wore a custom black Versace suit with molded metal arms adorned with Swarovski crystals and Medusa details while girlfriend Gigi chose a Tommy Hilfiger dress and Lynn Ban rings!
5. Claire Danes
Danes’ blue dress looked stunning on the red carpet, but it wasn’t until the lights went out and the enchanting fairytale unfolded! The Cinderella inspired ball gown, designed by Zac Posen, was made of ultrathin fiber optic fibers woven into organza, which lit up as a sci-fi wonder!
In addition to Wintour’s role of chairing the whole event, there were annual chairs and co-chairs for the day of the event. This year’s Gala witnessed the presence of Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada. What a mighty event!
