Ever since the Padmavati trailer released I just can’t stop myself from being spellbound at Deepika Padukone’s divine regal look! Trust DP to wow us time and again with her near perfect interpretation of every character. Whatever character might be given to her she owns it with her poise and grace.
This is her third venture with Sanjay Leela Bhansali; in her last two outings she played Leela (Movie: Ram-Leela), a Gujarati girl and Mastani (Movie: Bajirao Mastani), a courtesan during the Maratha rule respectively. In Ram Leela DP danced effortlessly in a 30 kg heavy lehenga whereas in Bajirao Mastani her armour weighed 20 kg! Phew!
We have been witness to Bhansali’s penchant for larger-than-life opulence and splendour. This time too with Padmavati, the director has ensured that the eponymous character is accoutered to leave a lasting impact. Now with the Ghoomar song doing the rounds we have a better insight into the look of Queen Padmavati of Chittor.
Through the trailer and the song we know that Padmavati has a stand out appearance owing to her unique unibrow. She is garbed in heavy and resplendent lehenga with the colour palette seeming to draw its inspiration from the sunset hues and sand dunes of Rajasthan. She is decked in traditional jewellery that infuses decadence to the overall look.
Borla or Rakhdi (Maang tikka worn by married women of Rajasthan), gajra bangles, bangadi a set of two bangles worn by Rajput brides), haathphool (also known as hand harness), nathni, bajubandh, goddess motif coin neckpiece, drop-dead gorgeous guluband, bespoke aadh necklace (collar-neckpiece) comes together to make her look every bit the royalty of Chittor. A lot of trinkets and jewelleries have also been sourced from flea markets.
Costume designer Rimple and Harpreet Narula ensured that the costumes donned by the actress are handcrafted to maintain the authenticity of the era. The designer duo has employed organic fabrics like mulls, chanderi and kota to weave breathable costumes.
Now let’s move to the other two principle characters of the movie Maharawal Ratan Singh (essayed by Shahid Kapoor) and the antagonist Sultan Alauddin Khilji essayed by Ranveer Singh. Shahid Kapoor looks intense and resolute in his overgrown mane as Maharawal Ratan Singh of Chittor. His handcrafted costumes were produced by 22 local artisans! The idea behind his looks was to incorporate muted colours associated with masculinity along with vivid hues that are characteristic of Rajasthan. However, it is Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji look that has become the talk of the town.
The brooding and menacing look is enough to send goosebumps! Fans have also found the look to have resemblance with Khal Drogo of Game of Thrones only to be dismissed by the Preetisheel Singh, the man behind Ranveer Singh’s look for the film.
The vision of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the dedication of designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula in conducting intensive research definitely deserves accolades.
