It was FDCI’s India Couture Week 2016 and the opening show was by none other than Manish Malhotra! The renowned celebrity fashion designer’s opening was grand indeed! Infused with as much opulence and grandeur as you would expect out of a Manish Malhotra couture collection, ‘A Persian Story’ was a bridal collection that left the audience stunned and enraptured. Held in New Delhi, the stage was designed to match the theme with an elaborate Persian setup complete with a mirror-finished runway, marble motifs, Persian chandeliers and yellow lamps that lit up the whole arena with a Middle-Eastern ambience.
Inspired by the architecture, the beautiful flora and fauna, and the valiant royalty from Persia, the designer showcased 50 limited edition exquisite works of art that took way the audience’s breath. Centered on the hues of rich browns, maroon, red, emerald green and azure blue, the couture line consisted of gorgeously intricate hand-woven golden embroidery done on sheer and velvet fabrics. Heavily embellished lehengas with unique drop-shouldered or off-shouldered tops, magnificent gowns done on velvet, sumptuous velvet jackets draped over cigarette pants, elaborate gowns and dresses in contemporary tailoring with a nod to the Persian motifs comprised this awe-inspiring collection. The collection had an array of ethnic menswear that were a resplendent juxtaposition of the ancient designs and modern cuts. The celebrity designer was quoted, “I had Persian Story’s idea in mind for so many years. I love Persian architecture, I like the colour schemes of Persia, music and that was a concept I had in my mind and that’s how it got generated…”
The show-opener for the night was Fawad Khan who looked every bit the Persian prince in a deep maroon tunic worn with a long black monogrammed kurta and was greeted generously with loud cheers from the audience. Deepika Padukone was the closing act for the couture line, looking enthralling in an off-shouldered red choli and gold-embroidered red lehnega and her appearance lead to audible gasps of delight from the audience. The designer himself took his bow with Deepika and Fawad at the end of the show.
