Make rush for your RUSTIC GARDEN!!!

For all my green thump aficionados who have been thinking of giving their garden a makeover, how about a rustic garden? Rustic garden entails keeping the natural environment of your garden intact and yet playing up with the décor that would impart a vintage and rustic feeling.

Although remaining true to the natural setting is the thumb rule for a rustic garden but you want to stand out, don’t you? Hence, much like everything else in your life plan ahead, make a checklist, scout for materials and there you go the garden artist!

The cardinal feature of any garden is space. So think how you want the garden to look like. If you are in doubts how to begin just sketch a mental map for your garden and think of how you want the garden to unfold. If you have small space then a neatly designed flower bed with morning glories on either sides of the alley would be a great idea. The beds and borders can be colour coordinated to demonstrate effort. The wall area can be done in the shade of maroon. Why leave the wall bare when you can do so much with it? You can position poles at the two corners and use wooden craters from your “junk” deposit to construct a shed or you can construct an arbor with weather-resistant logs. No that’s not it! To eliminate the stark void add twigs, trellis and branches. Get in wooden chairs and a wooden table and voila enjoy your morning tea as you savour in the panoramic view of your green canvas. If are thinking of painting the poles and craters then it’s not a good decision. Rustic garden looks best when it exudes a vintage and countryside vibe so let the wood do all the talking.

If you don’t buy this idea, then let your wall bear testimony of your love for vertical gardening. Gather up wooden planks and place in parallel position preferably leaving an inch or two in between each of them. The next step would be to attach hooks and then suspend tin buckets that can double up as planters. You can even use your old gumboot or a pack of unused bottles and substitute them for the run-of-the-mill flowering pots.

If you are endowed with a sprawling frontyard then there is so much more you can do. You can create a roadmap for your garden with rustic directional signboard. Wooden buckets of different shapes and sizes can be handy for inhabiting colourful flowers of each species. Or maybe you can ditch the wooden buckets and rope in wooden crater containers and let it be a tranquil dwelling for bushy plants and flowers. For contouring the flower beds wooden fence would do the rustic trick or brick fences or metal fences would be equally enticing. If you have a vintage cycle which is no longer used for its actual purpose then let it be an accessory. Place it in the lawn and huddle it with small buckets and craters, and grow your favourite flowers. Remember when you have discarded items they don’t make for junk but can become planters for your rustic garden.

You can even add a birdhouse if you would love to begin your morning with the chirp and flutter of feathery creatures. Go the market and choose a birdhouse depending on the kind of birds you would want to provide sojourn. If you have a balcony sharing the same floor as that of the garden then let the balcony be the extension of the rustic garden and retain the old-world charm. You can add a vintage Wall clock and suspend watering cans that would also act as planters. For the finishing touch how about giving a new destination to a cast-off metal gate by locating it between barn timbers that would culminate to an inviting trailer for what lies ahead in the garden!

Undulating surface is good for the garden as it helps to retain water and keep the plants moist for longer duration. Unlike mostly manicured gardens, don’t be annoyed with hedges, in fact hedges and shrubs makes the garden look all the more rustic and natural.
