2017 has been declared as the year of sustainability, to promote the current go-green movement that has taken the world by storm. So, it does not come as a surprise that Pantone has chosen a zesty yellowy-green colour to go with the theme of the year. Described by Pantone as “the hue of a tulip leaf with a dash of yellow”, the Colour of the Year 2017 is a vivacious Greenery (#15-0343). A pretty drastic departure from last year’s pretty pastel duo which were the Colours of the Year 2016, greenery is a bright shade of green that is meant to symbolize “revive, restore and renew”.
“From a pure colour point of view, it is an energetic yellow shade of green that adds life,” offered Pantone’s Director-Product Development, Michele Nicholson when asked his view on the colour. The spirited hue embodies the reconnection needed with nature and the rejuvenation that spring brings to life. This is the first time that Pantone has chosen such a vibrant shade of green for the Colour of the Year. In the past, both Emerald and Turquoise had the honour to be the Colour of the Year but they were darker and more muted than Greenery.
It is still quite early to sense the popularity of this hue but designers like Michael Kors, Max Mara, and Mary Katrantzou, Balenciaga, Pucci, Sies Marjan, and Kenzo played with beautiful, generous dashes of greenery in their Spring Summer 2017 runway collections. The red carpet was not too behind as celebrities like Emma Roberts and Brie Larson donned shades of green to various events effortlessly.
Considered the nature’s neutral, greenery is a bit of a difficult colour choice to pull off, but a bit of creative thinking can lead to unexpected results. It might take some time to find the perfect shade of green that does not make you look washed out or pale, but the beauty of greenery is that it works as a perfect base for deep purples and reddish hues. If you are not ready to experiment much, you can incorporate this colour into your wardrobe in small doses by adding accessories in this cheerful green shade. If you are ready to go the whole mile, cropped pants in greenery or a jacket in this lively shade will be impeccable for an eye-catching fashion-forward look.
What are your views on the colour of the year? Are you excited by this refreshing addition to the fashion palette or are you dreading the inflow of too many green dresses in the stores? Do let us know in the comments!
