The night was of the 2016 Tony Awards. It was the biggest night of the year for the Broadway bigwigs as all of the theatre industry assembled together in New York City to honor the best amongst them. It was hosted by the comedian James Corden. The ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere as everyone honoured the victims of the Orlando massacre and paid tributes to them in different ways. Dedications were made, hate was renounced and all the men wore grey remembrance ribbons, designed by William Ivey Long, on their suit jackets.
The theatre event, which once lacked in terms of fashion content when compared to its counterparts like the Oscars and the Grammys, had a fashion overhaul this year. Under the guidance of Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue and William Ivey Long, the costume designer and head of the American Theatre Wing, the style makeover was awe-inspiring. The event boasted of an all-star invite list. The attendees and the presenters walked the red carpet in swoon-worthy costumes with all eyes on them. The dress code of the evening was neither too formal ala Oscars nor too outrageous like the MTV awards. Instead, it hovered somewhere in-between. It was a middle ground where style and stage came together to create an evening which was not too theatric, but sparkled with elegant choices and classy ensembles.
The evening bragged of many amazing looks. From Lupita Nyong’s hand-embroidered floral off-shouldered Boss gown and Tiffany & Co jewelry to Renée Elise Goldsberry’s strapless buttercup Oscar de la Renta gown when she accepted her Tony for the night, the fashion quotient only got higher. The tell-tell sign that the fashion standards at the ceremony have reached new heights was evident when a lot of celebrities changed their outfits during the course of the night. This has been the norm in other award functions but is a first for the Tony’s.
Here are some of the most amazing outfits the celebrities carried for this night. Have a look.
