Rahul Mishra showcased his latest couture collection on the third day of FDCI India Couture Week 2016 and wowed everyone with his take on Indian bridal couture. The Taj Palace played the impeccable host to the runway show that featured a completely hand-woven line with opulent detailing while industry experts Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar, Anju Modi, Rakesh Thakore and Samanth Chauhan rooted for their fellow designer from the front row.
Titled ‘The Monsoon Diaries’, the 36-piece collection was inspired by the German biologist and artist Ernst Haecke’s work “Kunstformen der Natur (art forms of nature” (1899) and was a homage to the Mother Nature in all its glory. Like the earthy scent of earth after the first shower of rains, Mishra’s collection was a whiff of fresh air to bridal couture in India with its fresh fragrance. The collection was a part of the Paris runway regular’s sustainable production method and took 4 months of hard work by over 250 karigars to complete it.
Done in the traditional Indian textiles of khadi, Chanderi, organza, silk, chiffon, and georgette with extensive use of traditional Maheshwari weaves, metal wire work and zardosi, the collection consisted of stunning anarkalis, jacketed lehengas and sarees in sharp silhouettes and Mishra’s signature cutwork interspersed in the monsoon motifs of lotuses, peacocks and humming birds. The most outstanding trait of the collection was Mishra’s intentional omission of the traditional reds and maroons of the bridal wear in favour of whites, ivory, pastel shades of pink, peach, blues and mints, and darker hues of indigo and black.
On being quizzed on his decision of not having a showstopper for his collection, he said, “Bollywood is amazing and inspirational. I spent a lot of time on the 36 ensembles I showcased today, so I want the entire attention to go on this…”
