FDCI India Couture Week 2016 was at its creative best when Tarun Tahiliani opened his wedding wear collection on its second day at The Taj Palace. Teaming up with him on the runway was Manjari Chaturvedi, the classical dance stalwart who performed on Begum Akhtar’s “Deewana Bnana Hai Toh” and together they paid tribute to their common muse, ‘The Courtesan’ starting on an enchanting note for the evening.
Amidst the backdrop of a huge, magnificent chandelier, pillars covered with mirrors and the fragrance of the mogra lingering on the air, the stage was set for the couture line ‘The Last Dance Of The Courtesan’ dedicated to the misunderstood courtesan- the original fashion icons from the times of royalty in India. The range had gorgeous sarees, draped lehengas, lehenga sarees, anarkalis-cum-jumpsuits, and sherwanis. They were all made using the sheerest of the sheer silks, chiffons, tulle and chanderi. The garments were embroidered in Resham and embellished with Swarovski crystals that dazzled and shined. The colour palette oscillated from pastel hues of gold, ivory, beige, pink and salmon at one end to the deep oranges, reds, greens, and black on the other one.
“I wanted to go back to the roots. Today, the bridal wear has become too heavy and costumy. So, I felt it’s time to go back to not just costume but to be modern. My collection was super glamorous yet modern and contemporary,” said the designer after the end of the show about his collection. True to his words, the creations dripped with opulence and finery, but were free of the heaviness and bulk associated with bridal wear in general. Perfect for the contemporary bride, the collection was appreciated by everyone present.
