India is widely known as the country of colors and festivity. Our Bollywood movies also reflect a part of our culture which is full of celebrations, colors and music.
The confluence of all the above can be best depicted by one of the most important festivals of our nation –HOLI, the festival of colors and forgiveness. It is said that on Holi many arch rivals buried their hatchets after coloring each other with the colors of forgiveness. After all, the famous adage – ‘burana na mano HOLI hai’ – is not famous just like that.
While many would like to host the Holi party at their homes, I would personally recommend not doing so. Who would want to clean up the house after the partyers are done with the fun and frolic? Chances are it’s not only the floors that you’ll have to clean, but also your upholstery and various furniture pieces where the colors have conveniently landed. Now you cannot ask your guests to watch out where they throw the colors, can you? Of course, if you are playing the famous vrindavan’s ‘phoolon ki holi’ (barsane ki holi) then it’s a different story, as your whole home will smell lovely and next day you can just sweep off the dry flowers away.
Unless you have an army of staffers to clean up the mess, don’t even think of having a party at your residence. Why not let someone else volunteer to host the part and you become one of the guests? Or if you are so keen on hosting a party then how about doing it in a club or some gardens which are available on rent? You can always take charge for the food and of course the music. There are plenty of crazy holi songs in Bollywood to make everybody dance to their tunes after having one of those numerous glasses of bhaang– laced-thandais?
Let’s take a look at some of the dos and don’ts on this Holi (especially for your skin) and also make a usb stick with the most popular Holi songs.
- It’s very commonly known that people usually wear whites on Holi because the colors look the best on it. But often people forget that white means transparency specially after getting drenched in water and women, particularly teenagers, need to be careful.
- Go for some other pastel colors like yellow, sky blue or shades of pink. If you are still insisting on wearing white than for your sake please make sure you wear a thick white inner camisole or spaghetti and a pair of tights beneath which are easily available with brands like Jockey.
- Make sure to empty a bottle of oil in your hair so that the stubborn colors don’t enter your roots and give you a ‘sindoor bhari maang’ for the next few days. Not to mention, they will protect your beautiful hair from getting all limpy with the various chemicals that are usually found in the colors.
- When people say we’ll be having organic colors, don’t fall for it. They might be speaking the truth, but I bet there will be some notorious friend or friend’s friend who will be sneaking in the ‘pucca’ colors.
- Don’t forget to carry a big straw hat or an umbrella to protect you from the harshness of the sun. Imagine yourself completely drenched in the colors and the sun making it worse by drying out your skin, giving you a tan and leaving you completely dehydrated.
- A duffel bag which includes a towel and change of clothing is a must. Do carry a sunscreen so that you can apply it soon after you have washed your face.
- Cover your car seats with plastic. I bet you would not be wanting the seats to get wet, colorful and stinking for the next few days.
- Lastly don’t forget the usb stick with the songs which you can enjoy and dance to after having a crazy Holi-day.

Manchali chaal kaisa nawaabi ho gayi…….
