I downloaded this book on my Kindle thinking I would read a few pages and give up because it seemed so chick-litesque and very ‘Pride and Prejudice’ but I was so wrong. I got so enchanted by this delightful story of five sisters named alphabetically that I finished it off in a couple of days. Moreover, it takes you back to the 80’s, an era of Doordarshan, Ambassadors, Fanta and TV antennas. This is not just the story of Debajani (Dabbu) and Dylan Singh Shekhawat, but the story of two families and a host of other quirky characters, each one very entertaining.
The eldest sister Anjini who is vain and self-centered, the mysterious Dulari, Gulgul, Chachiji, the youngest and most recocious sister Eshwari (Anuja Chauhan, I would love a sequel featuring Eshwari and Satish), and lastly Dylan who with his long lashes and dark eyes reminds us of the Mills & Boon’s tall, dark & handsome men, the perfect hero for our fiery and feisty Dabbu. It also takes us back to our own fond memories of the early attraction of first love, the stolen glances and the first kiss.
The book “Those Pricey Thakur Girls” takes you through the political and social upheaval of the 80’s and moves to its somewhat predictable happy ending with some drama provided by the suicide attempt of Chachiji. The language used is very simple and lucid with no pretense of heavy words and complicated sentence construction. So if you are looking for some romance with humor thrown in, dig right into this book.
